Open seminar 16 September 2015 - Demokratiutredningen 2014: The role of political parties in democracy

In cooperation with the 2014 Demokratiutredningen, the party research program organized lectures and panel debates on the changing role of political parties in democratic systems.


The Swedish political science journal Statsvetenskaplig Tidskrift, Nr 2 2015, is a special issue on the 2014 Swedish election from a party perspective. The issue is rooted in the post-election symposium that the party research program arranged in October 2014. Read the entire issue here (In Swedish).


During the spring of 2015, the data collection regarding our party membership survey was conducted, and members of most Swedish parliamentary parties received a questionnaire. The survey is party of a larger European project that investigates Swedish party membership. Read more about the survey here.

During the autumn of 2014, the party research program arranged three research seminars:

30 September ”Political parties and social media” literature review and empirical applications. Ulf Bjereld and Linn Sandberg present research in progress.

28 October ”Party decline and response” Ann-Kristin Kölln, FORTE-postdoc, presents her dissertation on declining party membership and parties' counter-strategies. 

25 November "Eurosceptic parties' mobilization" Göran von Sydow (SIEPS) presents his research.


On 15-16 October, 2014, the party research program arranged a post-election symposium to evaluate and discuss the parties' role in the campaigns, and the political consequences of the election for the Swedish parties. The symposium was held lunch-to-lunch in Gothenburg, and documentation has been published on Partiforskningsbloggen. Ten researchers from Linnaeus University, Lund University, and the University of Gothenburg contributed with presentations and analyses. In addition to that, around 20 more Gothenburg-based researchers with an interest in party research participated in the symposium.
