The Party Research Program

The Party Research Program is a research network situated at the Department of Political Science at University of Gothenburg. The aim of the program is to create and spread knowledge and research related to political parties, to both other researchers and to an interested public. The Party Research Program focuses on the political parties, both as actors in the political system and as independent organizations. A minimal definition of political parties is that they are groups of people, who choose candidates, which compete in elections under a certain label. Generally, political parties’ role is much bigger than that. Political parties are essential in the democratic system, political parties have internal life, they co-operate, and they formulate policy proposals, reforms and ideologies. Political parties represent the underlying political conflicts in a country.

Political parties change, adapts to changing circumstances in society and their driving forces switch. The Party Research Program is interested in both normative and empirical issues of the parties’ role in the political system, but also for the parties’ internal life, development and history. On this webpage we gather links to other groups who research parties and links to party data of various kinds. We also host some data gathered about Swedish parties, such as the results of a survey among party members and data about party finances. At the moment these are only available on the Swedish version of the webpage, with the exception of the party membership survey.
